2. Stationary vs. Mobile
Stationary asphalt plant is mostly used for municipal engineering and high-grade highway construction, which is rarely relocated. Common Components of Asphalt Hot Mix Plant
- Cold feed unit – cold aggregate is fed in the hoppers of the cold feed unit where it is metered in the desired proportions.
- Drum dryer – aggregate is transported into a rotary dryer to reduce moisture content.
- Bitumen supply system – liquid asphalt cement is stored in a heated storage tank. It is pumped to an asphalt bucket where it is metered to achieve the required aggregate-to-asphalt ratio.

Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Working
Hot mix plant is one of the key units for road construction, and its performance directly affects the quality of asphalt pavement. The plant comprises several devices and systems to produce various hot asphalt mix efficiently and economically. The working of hot mix asphalt plant consists of a few main procedures:
- Cold aggregate is metered in the hoppers of the cold feed unit and then transported into a drum dryer by a belt conveyor.
- The hot aggregate from the dryer is dropped into a bucket elevator and transferred into a set of vibrating screens, where it is separated into four different sizes.
- At the same time, liquid asphalt in the heated storage tank is pumped to an asphalt bucket and weighed through load sensors in the weigh hopper (batch type).
- The filler is weighed in the weigh hopper where the recovered fines and imported fines can be separately controlled, and then dropped into the mixer by gravity or fed into it by a screw conveyor.
- Aggregate is dropped into the mixer and mixed for a period of time. Next, liquid asphalt is mixed with it to produce hot asphalt mix. The total mixing time is generally less than 60 seconds.
- The hot mix is stored in a hot storage silos or directly transported to the job site.
